I won’t go into too much detail on the ins and outs of coding and pricing Kindle books on Amazon, but needless to say, it’s a real mess. Coding a book is like web design in the 90s (theoretically, things should work, like SVG images, that are scalable, so perfect for diagrams, but they don’t, and just come out as black squares), and pricing makes your head hurt (you can have 70% royalties, but only if you charge under $9.99, but you will have to pay for each MB of data, meaning you might make nothing, or you can have free data, but will just get 35%, meaning you have to charge 300% to make the same amount, which will also be nothing). All this means that Kindle books have always been a headache, and really I should just stick to paper, plus they’re a bit shit for instructions books full of images, BUT, it’s the 2020’s, so I should do them.
Anyway, I’ve been fiddling with all my books for a while now and have got the files down to a size (from 80MB to 20MB), which means I can make about the same profit on a $9.99 book as a $27.99 book, and so all my books are now $9.99 (and they can be read on phones/tablets/PCs via Kindle app).
So, if you fancy an in-depth look at rope soloing, top rope soloing, big wall climbing, or rappeling, then you can experience a low-res experience over at Amazon (they’re also all on Kindle Select, whatever that is!).
Thanks Andy- any advice for kindle editions bought previously, but whose images have since become black squares?
