Support Band
Sometime in the early 90s I went to see Juliana Hatfield perform in Sheffield, at a venue long since turned to landfill. The place was almost empty, after all, who'd ever heard of Juliana Hatfield, and I don't think anyone missed much. But the support band was another matter, which perhaps explains why I don't remember her, only them. They really blew the audience away or would have if it hadn't consisted of shoe-gassing sensitive musos, who tended to keep their claps and yelps internal. Anyway, the band were great, and I remember asking why I'd never heard of them before and how a band like this good and this unknown like it was a super group made up of no-bodies. They finished their short set with "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles, each member leaving the stage one at a time (poor soft Juliana Hatfield having to go on after that!).
I turned to my then-wife and said, "wow, they were fucking amazing", to which she replied, being a muso, "No, they just sounded like The Stone Roses".
As I left, I looked at the poster to find out what the band was called, and seeing the name, I realised that they were not big due to a lack of talent, but due to a really crap choice of band name, which made them sound like an over 70s bingo hall, the band being called "Oasis".
