Question - would space hauling be useful for low angle routes with a lot of obstacles (like first 2 pitches on Washington Column, or is it better just to have the second mind the bags?
Yes, when you've got a lot of obstacles and jam points it's best for the cleaner to stay closer to the bags, but never below them, as on that kind of terrain, it's easy for the bags to knock rocks down. One great option is to make a haul cone out of polyurethane sheeting (like one of those things that go around a dogs neck after an operation). A haul cone like this will generally help the bags move over things much better (also have all your bags inline, like a train).
